Lacey and I took the colectivo down to Akumal today. There was a nice bay with some reefs really close to shore. I swam out, maybe 2000 meters, and the water gets really shallow at the reef line. As in dangerously shallow, where you have to pay attention to avoid the waves pushing you into the reef.
I saw a good mix of fish and coral but the reef is fairly dead from all the pressure on it. I have to tell people that Tulum is better, probably because the town is harder to get to and the reef is farther offshore (we had to use a kayak to get there). I'm glad we went, it was a nice place to chill for a day.
